Turkey Welcomes The Successful Conclusion Of The 2010 Review Conference Of The Treaty On The Non-proliferation Of Nuclear Wepons (npt).
Turkey welcomes the successful conclusion of the 2010 Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) on 28 May 2010 in New York.
At the end of the Review Conference, the opening session of which was attended by Ambassador Feridun Sinirlioğlu, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a balanced and comprehensive Final Document with a forward-looking approach on each of the main pillars of the Treaty, namely general and nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and the peaceful uses of nuclear energy has been adopted unanimously. Taking into account the inconclusive previous Review Conference of 2005, the conclusion of this year’s Review Conference with a substantial Final Document is considered important.
The reaffirmation of the full and effective implementation of the Treaty and the commitment to reduce and eventually to eliminate nuclear weapons, as well as the reaffirmation of the States Parties to the effective implementation of the decisions and resolutions of the previous Review Conferences, including the right of all States Parties to the development, research, production and use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes without discrimination and in conformity with the relevant articles of the Treaty and the commitment for the holding of a Conference in 2012 on the establishment of a zone free of all weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East in the Final Document are deemed positive.
Turkey, before and during the Review Conference, in her national capacity and together with other like-minded States Parties, provided proposals aiming at furthering the three main pillars of the non-proliferation regime in a balanced manner which were essentially reflected in the Final Document.
Turkey, in line with its commitment to a nuclear-weapons-free world, will continue to support international efforts aimed at implementing the approaches enshrined in the Final Document.
